01/22/2023 RM Newsletter
Good Morning, Good Afternoon, Good Evening, wherever you are reading.
Welcome to the 4th edition in 2023 of the Richard Murray Newsletter.
For all in humanity the elemental ideas of Martin Luther King jr are: Learning how to uplift every human being regardless of any racial variance to oneself, being honest about conditions between peoples or in any peoples, accepting the long process of slow change. None of said ideas are easy for most to manifest. How about you?
When I think of Marcus Garvey it is with sadness but not from failure as much as the wisdom in his elemental idea. Human beings can combine personally , individually, in all ways, but communities or collectives have their own life, their own relationship, and if you the community you are in is being oppressed by another community, you are not helping your community by fighting to remain side the community that is oppressing. In some ways, one can argue that Marcus Garvey's ideas are similar but contrapose to Martin Luther King jr's. The same in that both men truly preached non violence. But, contrapose in that MLK jr felt non violence was best when communities mixed and figured out how to be nonviolent. While Garvey , in greater wisdom, realized that the mixing of communities is the source of the violence. Human history proves Garvey correct in that way far more than any words from me or any other.
Tananarive Due has a new short story collection. Do you have a favorite short story collection? The People Could Fly link is my favorite for it is one of the best mixed media black short story collections you will find. I read High john the conqueror tales earlier on but it was text only. The earliest Black short story collection I can think of that reflects descended of enslaved culture is Every Tongue Got To Confess link , originally collected in 1927 by Zora Neale Hurston. I can go on a joyous rant about every tongue so I will simply say I love that book. I need to get it in a paper version one day. If you like non english consider La Cenelles link, the earliest book of Black poetry in the usa. If you like stage or screen plays consider Black Theater USA. It has two volumes, I have both but I suggest you start with 1847 to 1938 link. If you are still undecided have you read my short story collections? I have four 1) Sunset Children Stories 2) Looking West and West 3) Poetry or more 3) Concrete Fables . The key to a short story collection isn't to love each story, the key is to have at least one. For example, I remember in The People Could Fly the story of the devil's daughter and the task her lover has to accomplish to satisfy her father. She helps him and they go off together. A guilty pleasure is Le Jester from Alice Dunbar Nelson in her collection link . You may have seen a work from Tananarive Due side her husband Steven Barnes if you are a fan of the most recent Twilight Zone reboot. Look at the clip below.
And happy year of the rabbit, the next edition i will share content to it.
Well, if any of you are Kobo writers or writers in general. Consider the Kobo Writing Life setting up for publishing success below. And, I have a few invitationals to tell you about. I will apply myself to the stageplay. I can not recall creating a stageplay before, definitely not recently. I have made screenplay's recently, but they are not the same.
